teamlab designs pixiv office with 250m interactive work desk

tokyo based teamlab have designed a vibrantly colored, interactively oriented office space for pixiv, a japanese online community for artists, where users can exhibit their illustrations and get feedback via a rating system. the workplace centers the architectural arrangement around a 250m long desk that snakes throughout the entire space, zig-zaging around the room and meandering around corners and against walls. because the wooden table is completely connected, teamlab has molded its shape so that a bridge-like underpass allows workers to walk beneath it, directly through the desk. cut-out holes act as private areas that individuals can climb into and remotely work with a laptop, while a three-tiered bookshelf can be ascended and contributes a lofty place to settle above the rest of the facility.

‘block chairs’ are used as seating for the coworking spaces. the light-weight stools can be easily stacked and moved, and can even be arranged into dividing walls, separating the office environment from the presentation and coworking spaces.

the walls of the entryway are composed of 3,000 place cards — pixiv’s mission is to make it so that anyone can enjoy drawing — so visitors to the office can make their own picture. the placards are affixed with magnets, so it’s simple to take them down, draw another picture, and put them back up on the walls. the office interior is built from the very art that is drawn by their guests.
